Seasonal hair loss: myths, truths and strategies
Every year, between September and October, hair begins to fall out more. Is this normal? What is true and what is just a myth? Let's discover the scientific answers and the most effective prevention strategies according to the Estērel Method.
Why does hair fall out in autumn?
It is a natural phenomenon and part of the hair's life cycle. Each hair follicle goes through three main phases:
- Anagen (growth)
- Catagen (transition)
- Telogen (fall)
In autumn, a greater number of follicles physiologically enter the telogen phase: this is a biological trait that dates back to hormonal cycles linked to sunlight. In other words, it is normal to lose more hair at this time of year, but that does not mean that effective action cannot be taken.
Caution: when should you be concerned?
If:
- Hair loss lasts more than 6-8 weeks
- You notice a visible reduction in volume
- Your hair is thinning or your scalp is more exposed
- Hair loss is accompanied by itching, pain, flaking or excess sebum
- ... then it's time to take action, starting with an accurate diagnosis.
Three facts to know about seasonal hair loss
1. There is no miracle cure. But there is prevention.
Generic supplements, ‘miracle’ shampoos, improvised massages: quick fixes often do not solve the root cause of the problem. The key is to anticipate the peak of hair loss with targeted treatments, preferably starting at the end of summer.
2. Men and women: different mechanisms, different solutions.
In men, hair loss is often hormonal/genetic. In women, it can be linked to stress, seasonal changes, thyroid imbalances or post-partum. This is why the treatment plan must be personalised.
3. The scalp is as important as the hair.
A healthy follicle comes from healthy skin: hair loss can also be prevented by rebalancing the microbiota, reducing invisible inflammation and stimulating microcirculation.
