Alopecia areata arises with a sudden and rapid loss of hair and in certain areas of the scalp and body, well defined and circumscribed, circular or oval in shape.
The mechanism of onset of this condition is not yet clear; however, many studies lead to the genetic nature and to an incorrect immune response that no longer recognizes the hair follicle structures as "their own".
Therefore, specific antibodies (abnormal T lymphocytes) are produced which stop their activity, thus causing very fast hair loss in the affected area.
